After three marathons, five triathlons, and 10 years of ignoring her symptoms, 35-year-old Kristine Breese suffered heart failure and received a pacemaker in 1999. As the mother of two young children, Breeses surgery not only saved her life, but gave her a chance to examine her priorities and build a better future for herself and her family.Today, works as a writer, speaker and consultant based in Los Angeles. She continues to run (although not as far), swim (although not as fast) and enjoys the joys and challenges of being both a mom and a business owner. This can mean playing Legos instead of checking her email, stopping for ice cream on the way to FedEx and rehearsing speeches in front of two kids and a black lab. Breese earned a Masters in Journalism at Northwestern University and her Bachelors from UCLA. Breeses first book, Cereal for Dinner & Other Shortcuts, Strategies and Sanity for Moms Battling Illness, published by St. Martins Press in May 2004. While the book specifically targets women, like her, who have experienced serious illness while simultaneously raising a family, it offers hope and strength for all women as it teaches them how to care for themselves physically, emotionally and spiritually even while caring for those around them. Breese is a volunteer and spokesperson for the American Heart Association, appearing on TV, radio and at live events to promote awareness among women that heart disease is the No. 1 threat to their health. She also speaks widely on issues related to parenting, balanced living and finding your authentic voice. |
